Week 4

It's freezing again in New York!  This week's staying warm outfit is a J. Crew black tissue tee turtleneck, a Moth heathered pink wool knit skirt, black Frye boots, a black and white cotton H&M scarf, and black leggings with gray kneesocks.  These are all basics for me that I wear pretty regularly.

Moth is a company that I've come to really love.  They make interesting knitwear that has very clean cut layers.  This skirt is essentially like layering sweaters on the lower half of your body.  I'm lifing up the top layer in the photo to show the construction.  Despite the fact that it looks like light petals, it might be the warmest article of clothing I have.

This is a simple black and white striped cotton scarf from H&M.  I wear it constantly and so do several other people I know who have it.  It's irresistably versatile.  I realize it may seem redundant with a turtleneck, but it really does keep me warmer.  The tissue turtleneck from J. Crew is probably one of the best things they make, by the way.

I've realized that I should also introduce my Frye boots.  They are the same ones from Week 2.  I wear them constantly.  I love flat boots, and I don't wear boots that zip on the inside.  These pull on and are really well made.  I was really excited to find them last year.  They are basically perfect except that the little spur detail slides down a lot and makes a clinking noise as I walk.  I need to take them to have a stitch put in the little strap to keep them in place, but I can't bear to part with them for more than a day.  I bought them knowing that they would last forever, and if I want to change them a little I can just have the straps cut off for a cleaner look.

Week 3

This week's post is about finding reasons to justify the purchase of my new shirt.

1. I really like it.
2. I have been looking for the perfect black and white striped shirt for years to no avail, and this is a good substitute.
3. It was $138 marked down to $25.
4. I can already think of about 6 other things in my things in my closet that I will wear it with.
5. The buttons are very cute and actually button. (Form follows function!)
6. It has pockets.
7. I need more non-work clothes.
8. Buying it made my tension headache go away.

I think those are good enough reasons.  Anyway, I'm wearing a red and white French Connection cotton top, black twill H&M pants, and red faux-snakeskin Sam Edelman ballet flats with little perforations.

Here is the neckline of the top.
And here is the back.  I haven't included details of the pants and shoes because they're not so special.  The pants are actually interesting because they are high-waisted, but they're H&M quality and stretch and wrinkle in strange places.  The shoes were actually once very cute, but I've been caught one too many times in the rain wearing them.

So, I do need to replace the shoes and find better black pants in the next few months.  Would sailor pants look to costumey with this top?

Week 2

This week's outfit is an orange washed silk Young, Fabulous & Broke dress, a black merino J. Crew cardigan, black tights, a skinny gray J. Crew belt, and my black Frye boots.

You can't see the neckline of the dress in the first photo, but it looks like this. I'm still having a hard time with the whole self-portraiture part of this. I now give a lot of credit to all of the girls who take pictures of themselves in their underwear in their bathroom mirrors and post them on myspace. It's an underrated talent.

The buttons are my favorite part of the dress. It's actually baggy and an unflattering color on me. I try to always belt it and break up the muted orange with black, gray, or blue. It's worth the extra effort getting dressed to wear those buttons all day, though.

Week 1

Happy New Year! This post wouldn't have happened without my friend Cori and her wonderful closet. The dress and shoes are hers. I wasn't going to do someone else's outfit as my first post, but it's a new year and calls for something festive. I have a wedding to attend tomorrow so I raided Cori's colorful, girly, sexy closet. It is better edited than any boutique. The dress is Sophia Eugene and the amazing shoes are Celine. Yes, the shoes do have a little silver chain on the heel; it's not just a smudge on my mirror. The dress has a racer back with an inverted triangle that I wasn't able to photograph. Anyone have any tips for doing a full-length photograph of yourself? It's harder than I anticipated! It's cold in New York and supposed to snow tomorrow. I'm going to throw on a cropped black Prada cardigan closed with a brooch to keep from becoming a Blairesicle.
